RETORNOS DE LA DESBANDÁ

Location : Centro de Exposiciones

In February 1937, more than one hundred thousand people fled in terror from Malaga along the Almería highway, fearing the repression of the troops that arrived at the gates of the city. It is the civilian population, mostly entire families that, for more than 200 km, are persecuted, harassed, machine-gunned from land, sea and air by the rebel army with significant support from the forces of Moussolini and Hitler. The event is known as La Desbandá.

This crime, perhaps the most tragic of our Civil War, remained forgotten or silenced for a long time. However, with the tenacious efforts of different organizations, it has become the most vividly recovered event of that war: three dozen books, fifteen documentaries, eleven different exhibitions, press articles, radio programs, television debates and a long annual hiking march, keep the memory of that event alive.

The Returns of La Desbandá exhibition offers a new perspective: it shows the photographs of the crime and also presents the returns, that is, the creative interpretations (painting, sculpture and poetry) born then and now, out of the pain of that tragedy with reproductions and originals of some thirty authors, among others: Picasso, Carreño, Helios Gómez, Lamberet, Garvayo, Alberti, Prados, Vallejo, Saramago and Neruda.
