MEXICAN ALTAR OF THE DEAD
From October 20 to November 12
On these dates, Mexico City becomes a great festival in which indigenous traditions and Christian culture mix. According to the belief of the ancient Mexican civilization, when the individual dies, his spirit continues to live in Mictlán, and on this date they return to their old homes to visit their relatives.
The arrival of the dead is a celebration of joy and evocation, since the cordial visit of the deceased is not a cause for sadness. The hospitality of Mexicans is reflected even more if the visitors are their deceased relatives, which is why from ancient times to the present day, they have a large “mortuary banquet” with an altar richly decorated with all the things that the deceased liked.
