CATALÀ-ROCA. The lucidity of the gaze

One hundred years after his birth, Francesc Català-Roca established himself as one of the key figures of humanist documentary photography in post-war Spain. Aware of avant-garde artistic photography and the experimental trends that preceded the Civil War, concerned with the search for an expressive, aesthetic language in which form predominated over content, Català-Roca opted in the post-war period for a humanist documentary photography that would reflect the content, that would reflect the reality that surrounded him above any artistic experimentation.

His style, which was consolidated in the fifties, is marked by his own vision, which is manifested in the way he handles the position of the camera with precise framing that avoids frontality, the use of high and low angles, the mastery of light and chiaroscuro, the search for balance and the introduction of dynamism, as well as in his great love and empathy for what he photographs. In his photographs we find the portrait of the city and its people, its culture, its traditions, its characters, its ways of life, its hardships and also its dreams.
