LGTBIQ+ PRIDE DAY at BENALMÁDENA

BENALMÁDENA REAFFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT 'TO PROMOTE ATTITUDES AND POLITICS THAT ENCOURAGE SOCIAL AWARENESS' FOR LGTBIQ+ PRIDE DAY

Benalmádena has joined yesterday the celebration of International LGTBIQ+ Pride Day, placing rainbow bands on municipal buildings such as the Town Hall and the Casa de la Cultura.

In addition, at the next ordinary plenary session in June, to be held this Thursday 30th, the government team will bring a motion to reaffirm the commitment of the Corporation 'to the construction of more tolerant societies that live together in diversity and promote the fulfilment of the violated rights of LGTBIQ+ people'.

'Human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights without any distinction: LGTBIQ+ rights are and will always be human rights, and therefore we must work for a world of absolute tolerance, freedom and equality', said the Mayor of Benalmádena, Víctor Navas.

'This day reminds us of the importance of continuing to build more tolerant societies that live together in diversity and promote the fulfilment of the violated rights of LGTBIQ+ people,' added Navas.

'This is a day to continue mobilising for a diverse and respectful society with gender diversity, capable of eradicating hatred and discrimination; to continue deepening democracy and its rights', said the deputy mayor, E. Pablo Centella.

'From the institutions we must ensure the effective equality of all LGTBIQ+ people and their families, as an essential element of a good coexistence for progress and social development', said Centella.

The motion to be taken to plenary this Thursday includes agreements such as showing the Corporation's commitment to continue promoting attitudes and policies that favour social awareness for an effective change of mentality that eradicates LGTBIQ+ phobic attitudes and the rejection of them.

It also includes the need to achieve broad consensus for the necessary legislative, administrative and other measures to prohibit and eliminate discriminatory treatment based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Finally, the motion will underline the particular concern about the many internationally documented cases that highlight, even today, the criminalisation in some countries of homosexuality and transsexuality, disenfranchisement and legal discrimination, as well as impunity for these crimes.

International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Intersex and Queer Day commemorates worldwide the events that took place on the night of 28 June 1969 at the Stonewall Pub in New York's Greenwich Village. These events gave rise to and are considered the catalyst for the international movement for the recognition of the rights of LGTBIQ+ people and have been commemorated since 1970.
